In this article, you’ll learn how to use CoreAVC codec and the KMPlayer to get smooth video playback with high definition video files such as AVCHD compressed M2TS files used by many HD camcorders.
Playing HD video requires a lot of performance from your PC and not all own powerful 3GHz + multi-core processor equipped computer. Fortunately there is an alternative and affordable way to turn your older PC into a HD video player.
Let’s get started to install CoreAVC codec and configure it with the powerful KMPlayer.
1. Download and install the codec
Installing CoreAVC video codec and Haali Media Splitter is very straight forward process, so all you need to do is to follow the install wizard’s steps.
2. Download and Install the KMPlayer
Installing KMPlayer was featured on a previous article, but the key point to remember is to choose the Performance option during the installation wizard process. This optimizes the playback on slower computers.
3. Configure CoreAVC to work with KMPlayer
This is the step which might be slightly difficult for beginners as there are not that many instructions available on adding custom codecs into KMPlayer. After launching KMPlayer, follow these steps to configure the video codec in KMPlayer to play H.264 and AVCHD files.
Go to Preferences – Filter Control – Decoder Usage and select External Video Decoder
At the bottom of the screen choose External Decoder Search
Click Add External Codec and locate CoreAVCDecoder.ax file from your computer.
After double clicking the CoreAVCDDecoder.ax, it will be added as External Video Codec and you can proceed by clicking OK
Now select *CoreAVC Video Decoder for H.264 and AVC1 video formats and finally click Close
Congratulations, now you have configured your KMPlayer to work together with CoreAVC codec. You can test the codec by playing some of your AVCHD compressed video files or M2TS files from a camcorder.
